Dec 15, 1973 – Jockey Sandy Hawley wins 500th race of the year

In the third race at Laurel Park race track in Maryland Sandy Hawley rode Charlie Jr. to victory.  It was Hawley’s 500th win of the year, the first jockey ever to accomplish the feat.  He would finish the year with a record total of 515 wins, surpassing the previous mark of 485 set by Bill Shoemaker.

Nov 21, 1987 – Ferdinand wins Breeders’ Cup Classic

Kentucky Derby winners Ferdinand in 1986 and Alysheba in 1987 go down to the wire in a photo finish with Ferdinand winning by a nose.

June 10, 1978 – Affirmed wins the triple crown

Affirmed and Alydar go down to the wire but Affirmed prevails to win the Belmont Stakes completing the triple crown.

June 6, 1943 – Count Fleet wins Triple Crown

Count Fleet wins the Belmont stakes by 30 lengths with a time of 2:28.  The victory also gave Count Fleet the triple crown.

June 5, 1937 – War Admiral wins triple crown

Sunday, June 5th, 2011

In the 3rd leg of the triple crown War Admiral defeats the field handily at the Belmont Stakes to become only the 4th horse to win the triple crown.
