In one of the biggest upsets in boxing history James “Buster” Douglas knocks out Mike Tyson in the 10th round of the heavyweight championship fight held in Tokyo.  Prior to the fight Douglas was a 42-1 underdog to win according to The Mirage Casino in Las Vegas.

The second of three fights between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier took place at Madison Square Garden.  For Ali it was a chance at revenge for losing to Frazier nearly 3 years earlier but victory also meant a chance to fight George Foreman who held the heavyweight title at the time.  The fight would go 12 rounds with Ali winning by unanimous decision.

In Kingston, Jamaica, George Foreman defeated Joe Frazier in 2 rounds by knocking down Frazier 6 times.  When Frazier goes down for the first time, Howard Cosell makes his famous call “Down Goes Frazier, Down Goes Frazier, Down Goes Frazier!”.  This was the first fight ever broadcast on HBO.

Dec 26, 1908 – Jack Johnson Becomes First Black Heavyweight Champion

In Sydney, Australia Jack Johnson takes on Canadian world champion Tommy Burns.  In the 14th round Johnson was beating Burns badly when the fight was stopped and the cameras were forced to stop rolling.  Johnson became the first black heavyweight champion of the world but someone 100 years ago didn’t want the proof on film.  The fight was recorded but the knockout was not.

Dec 14, 1920 – Jack Dempsey defeats Bill Brennan

In the 2nd defense of his heavyweight title, Jack Dempsey defeats Bill Brennan at Madison Square Garden in New York.  The Manassa Mauler retains his belt with a 12th round knockout.

Dec 5, 1947 – Joe Louis vs. Jersey Joe Walcott

At age 33 Joe Walcott becomes the oldest man to compete for the world heavyweight title.  He knocks down Louis in the 1st and 4th rounds but is unable to defeat the champ as Louis retains the title.

Nov 30, 1956 – Floyd Patterson wins heavyweight title

In a 5th round knockout, 21 year old Floyd Patterson defeats Archie Moore for the heavyweight championship.  Patterson became the youngest heavyweight champion and also the first Olympic gold medalist to win a professional heavyweight crown.

Nov 25, 1980 – Sugar Ray Leonard wins rematch with Roberto Duran who pleads “No Mas”

Earlier in the year Roberto Duran beat Sugar Ray Leonard in 15 rounds in a match dubbed The Brawl in Montreal.  In the rematch in New Orleans Duran, who was out of shape and not motivated, quits in the 8th round.
