In a game against Detroit, Chamberlain notches his 20,884th point moving ahead of Bob Petit on the all-time NBA scoring list. Chamberlain would finish his career with 31,419 points which would eventually be surpassed by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on April 5, 1984. Chamberlain highlights from the 67-68 season can be seen starting at 11:04 of the video.
In November 1991 Magic Johnson held a press conference to announce he had contracted the HIV virus and that he was retiring from basketball immediately. He did not play at all in the 1991-92 season but was still voted an all star by the fans. He scored 25 points, made nine assists, and was named the game MVP as the Western Conference beat the East 153-113.
During the NBA All Star weekend festivities in Dallas, Spud Webb of the Atlanta Hawks faces a tall order going up against seven competitors in the slam dunk contest. Webb, who is one of the shortest players in NBA history, wins the competition by beating out his teammate Dominique Wilkins.
Larry Brown, who has coached numerous college and pro basketball teams, was a player for the University of North Carolina from 1961-63. In this game, footage can be seen of Brown going in for a layup but takes exception to a hard foul by Art Heyman of the Blue Devils. The ensuing fight dominates the remainder of this video. The game is looked back upon as an early example of what has become one of college basketball’s greatest rivalries.
One of the many innovations that began in the ABA and continued after the merger with the NBA was the Slam Dunk contest. It was first held at McNichols Arena in Denver during half time of the ABA All-Star game. The contest only lasted one year then was resurrected by the NBA in 1984. The winner of the first Slam Dunk contest was Julius Erving due in part to his dunk leaping from the free throw line which can be seen at the 5:30 mark of the video.
Los Angeles Lakers defeat the Toronto Raptors 122-104 with Kobe Bryant scoring two thirds of his team’s points. His total of 81 points (55 in the 2nd half) is the second most ever scored in an NBA game next to Wilt Chamberlain’s 100 points in 1962.
