David Duval entered the final round of the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic at the Palmer Course at PGA West in La Quinta, CA trailing the leader by 7 strokes. He was having the round of his life with 11 birdies and 6 pars through 17. On the final hole, a par 5, Duval reached the green in two and sank his 8 foot eagle putt to win the tournament defeating Steve Pate by one stroke. Duval became just the third golfer to shoot a 59 in PGA tournament play following Al Geiberger in 1977 and Chip Beck in 1991.
Jan 21, 1990 – McEnroe outburst leads to disqualification at Australian Open
Saturday, January 21st, 2012In his quarterfinal match against Mikael Pernfors at the Australian Open John McEnroe is leading 2 sets to 1 during play in the 4th set. A disagreement with a line judge, a broken racket, and an argument with the chair umpire leads to McEnroe being cited for three conduct violations which causes McEnroe to be disqualified and the match is awarded to Pernfors. It was the first time in 17 years that a player had lost a match in a grand slam tournament for miscounduct.
Jan 20, 1968 – Houston defeats UCLA breaking Bruins 47 game winning streak
Friday, January 20th, 2012At the Houston Astrodome before 52,693 fans the Houston Cougars defeat the UCLA Bruins 71-69 in the first ever nationally televised regular season college basketball game. The upset was driven by #44 Elvin Hayes and his 39 points over heavily favored UCLA who had not lost a game in two and a half seasons. Lew Alcindor was held to just 15 points and had a shooting percentage from the field under 50% for the only time in his college career.
Jan 13, 1999 – Michael Jordan retires for the 2nd time
Friday, January 13th, 2012Following three consecutive NBA titles Michael Jordan retired from basketball in 1993 to pursue a minor league baseball career with the Birmingham Barons, the AA affiliate of the White Sox. He returned to the court in 1995 and won another 3 consecutive championships with the Bulls in 1996, 1997, and 1998. This video is a Nike commercial that traces his career backward from his 6th title.
Jan 12, 1992 – Troy State sets college record with 258 points in a game
Thursday, January 12th, 2012Shooting 47 of 109 from three point range the Trojans from Troy State in Alabama beat DeVry 258-141 in a matchup of Division II schools. The game set a record for most point by one team with 258 plus most points by both teams combined with 399.
Jan 6, 1995 – Lenny Wilkens becomes NBA all time winningest head coach
Friday, January 6th, 2012The Atlanta Hawks defeat the Washington Bullets 112-90. The win gives head coach Lenny Wilkens 939 victories for his career surpassing Red Auerbach at the top of the all time coaching wins list. Wilkens is one of three men to be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame as both a player and a coach (the others are John Wooden and Bill Sharman).
Jan 3, 1993 – Bills down by 32 points beat Oilers in NFC Wild Card game
Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012Houston Oilers lead 35-3 in the 3rd quarter but Buffalo comes back with five unanswered touchdowns to take the lead 38-35. Houston kicks a game tying field goal to send the game into overtime. On the first drive in the extra period Warren Moon throws an interception giving the Bills great field position enabling Steve Christie (pictured above) to kick the winning field goal for a 41-38 win.
Jan 2, 1996 – Nebraska defeats Florida for the national championship
Monday, January 2nd, 2012This Fiesta Bowl matchup featured the two best teams in the nation who both entered the game undefeated. #1 Nebraska destroys #2 Florida by the score of 62-24 with MVP honors going to Tommie Frazier and Michael Booker. Frazier led Nebraska throwing for 105 yards and a touchdown but did more damage on the ground rushing for 199 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Dec 25, 1995 – Emmitt Smith sets record with 25th rushing TD of the season
Sunday, December 25th, 2011The Dallas Cowboys go into Arizona to play the Cardinals in the final week of the season. The Cowboys come away with a 37-13 victory thanks in part to a rushing touchdown by Emmitt Smith, his 25th of the season which set an NFL record surpassing the mark set by John Riggins in 1983. The touchdown can be seen beginning at 31:41 of the video.
