Saturday, February 18th, 2012With one lap to go Donnie Allison leads Cale Yarborough but the two crash which clears the way for Richard Petty to take the lead and win the race. The two drivers emerge from their cars and a fight ensues on the infield. The win for Petty was his 6th at Daytona.
Feb 18, 1978 – First Ironman triathlon
Saturday, February 18th, 2012In Honolulu, HI the first ever Ironman triathlon is held. It consisted of a 2.4 mile ocean swim, a 112 mile bike ride and a 26.2 running marathon. Only 15 men entered the race and 12 finished, won by Gordon Haller with a total time of 11:46:58. Henry Forest, interviewed in the video, finished 7th with a time of 15:30:14.
Feb 7, 1976 – Darryl Sittler tallies 10 points in one game
Tuesday, February 7th, 2012Maple Leafs captain Darryl Sittler sets the record for most points in a game with 10, scoring 6 goals and adding 4 assists. He surpassed the previous mark of 8 points set by Maurice “The Rocket” Richard. The Leafs went on to beat the Boston Bruins 11-4 in Toronto.
Feb 6, 1971 – Alan Shepard plays golf on the moon
Monday, February 6th, 2012Alan Shepard, Commander of the Apollo 14 mission that landed on the moon, takes a few swings at a couple of golf balls. He used a Wilson 6 iron head attached to a lunar sample scoop handle. Because of the thickness of the space suit Shepard would have to swing the club with only one hand.
Feb 1, 1970 – Terry Sawchuk records 103rd career shutout
Wednesday, February 1st, 2012The New York Rangers shut out the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-0 with Terry Sawchuk in net. It was the 103rd shutout of his career that included years with the Red Wings, Bruins, Maple Leafs, Kings, and his final season with the Rangers. Sawchuk was a 4 time Stanley Cup Champion with the Red Wings and Maple Leafs and is known as one of the best goalies in the history of the NHL. His career shutout record stood for nearly 30 years until it was broken by Martin Brodeur on Dec 21, 2009.

The second of three fights between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier took place at Madison Square Garden. For Ali it was a chance at revenge for losing to Frazier nearly 3 years earlier but victory also meant a chance to fight George Foreman who held the heavyweight title at the time. The fight would go 12 rounds with Ali winning by unanimous decision.

Friday, January 27th, 2012One of the many innovations that began in the ABA and continued after the merger with the NBA was the Slam Dunk contest. It was first held at McNichols Arena in Denver during half time of the ABA All-Star game. The contest only lasted one year then was resurrected by the NBA in 1984. The winner of the first Slam Dunk contest was Julius Erving due in part to his dunk leaping from the free throw line which can be seen at the 5:30 mark of the video.
Jan 22, 1973 – “Down Goes Frazier” as George Foreman becomes world heavyweight champion
Sunday, January 22nd, 2012In Kingston, Jamaica, George Foreman defeated Joe Frazier in 2 rounds by knocking down Frazier 6 times. When Frazier goes down for the first time, Howard Cosell makes his famous call “Down Goes Frazier, Down Goes Frazier, Down Goes Frazier!”. This was the first fight ever broadcast on HBO.
Jan 19, 1974 – UCLA 88 game winning streak comes to an end
Thursday, January 19th, 2012With under four minutes to play UCLA is leading Notre Dame 70-59 but the tides would turn and Notre Dame would go on a 12-0 to end the game. The Fighting Irish win 71-70 and end the Bruins 88 consecutive game winning streak, the longest in NCAA men’s basketball history.
