Feb 26, 1935 – Babe Ruth signs with the Boston Braves

Babe Ruth is given his unconditional release from the Yankees by owner Colonel Jacob Rupert and signs on with the Boston Braves.   Owner Emil Fuchs signs Ruth not only to be a player for the Braves but he was also named as a team vice president and an assistant manager on the field.

Feb 15, 1932 – Eddie Eagan becomes only athlete to win gold at both Winter and Summer Olympics

As a member of the US four man bobsleigh team Eddie Eagan wins a gold medal in Lake Placid.  12 years earlier at the summer Olympics in Antwerp, Eagan won a gold medal for boxing in the light heavyweight division.

Feb 13, 1936 – Germans take gold in figure skating pairs at Nazi Winter Olympics

Before the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin there were the Winter Games also hosted by the Nazi regime in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.  Video shows ladies competition, mens competition, and pairs which was won by the German pair of Maxi Herber and Ernst Baier, one of three gold medals taken home by the host nation.

Feb 2, 1936 – First five players elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame

Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Babe Ruth and Honus Wagner become the first players elected by the Baseball Writers Association of America to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY.  The ceremony would not be held until the summer of 1939 to coincide with the opening of the Hall of Fame and Museum.  226 ballots were cast that first year with a minimum of 170 votes (75%) needed for election.  Ty Cobb heads this list of initial inductees with 222 votes or 98.2%.  Not very much video of Ty Cobb as a player exists, here is a good sampling.

Dec 18, 1935 – NYU defeats California in college basketball matchup

Back in the day, college basketball doubleheaders were all the rage at Madison Square Garden.  Two handed set shots were the norm and after each basket there was a jump ball at center court.  On this day 18,000 fans showed up to see St. Johns and NYU, two of the top local college draws and two of the top teams in the nation. NYU beats California 41-26.

Dec 16, 1939 – LIU defeats Oregon in a college basketball matchup of defending champions

Played at Madison Square Garden before a huge crowd of nearly 18,000 this game featured the 1939 NIT champion Long Island University squad facing the NCAA champion Oregon Ducks. LIU enters the game on a 39 game winning streak but is pushed to overtime.  Video shows Oregon’s Vic Townsend at the line with 53 seconds remaining in OT as he makes the underhand free throw to give the Ducks a one point lead.  LIU moves the ball up the court and works it down low to Dolly King, pictured below, who scores the winning basket to give LIU a 56-55 victory.  King, who was referred to by Arthur Daley of The New York Times as a “220-pound Negro Hercules”, not only scored the winning basket but also scored a basket with 20 seconds left in regulation that tied the game at 50.

Dec 13, 1936 – Packers win their first NFL Championship game

Played on the neutral site of the Polo Grounds in New York City the West champion Green Bay Packers defeat the East champion Boston Redskins 21-6.

Dec 11, 1938 – Giants defeat Packers in NFL Championship Game

At the Polo Grounds, the New York football Giants win their 3rd NFL Championship.  Giants take a 9-0 lead in the first quarter but Green Bay answers back.  Video shows all scoring in the 2nd quarter including a Packers 40 yard touchdown pass that made it 9-7, Giants 21 yard touchdown pass to extend their lead to 16-7 and a Packers 1 yard rushing touchdown by Clarke Hinkle making the score 16-14 at the half.  In the 3rd quarter, also shown on the video, Green Bay kicks a field goal to take the lead for the first time in the game 17-16 until Hank Soar of the Giants catches a 23 yard touchdown pass that gave the Giants the lead 23-17 which is how it ended.

Dec 9, 1934 – Giants win their first NFL Championship in the “Sneakers” game

In the 2nd NFL Championship game the Giants face the Chicago Bears on the frozen field at the Polo Grounds in New York.  The Bears enjoyed a 13-3 lead in the third quarter, but then the Giants tried a new tactic by putting on basketball sneakers instead of their regular football spikes to provide better footing on the icy slick field.  The Giants responded with 27 unanswered points in the fourth quarter and won the game 30-13.

Nov 26, 1936 – Duke defeats NC State 13-0

Clarence “Ace” Parker returns a punt for a touchdown in a victory over NC State.  Parker was a 3 sport star at Duke and in 1936 was a first team All American tailback.  He went on to play professional football in the NFL and AAFC and is a member of the Football Hall of Fame.
